CALSSA Policy Director
Job Description

The primary goal of the Policy Director is to develop a policy roadmap for the growth of customer-sited solar and storage in California, and to implement it with CALSSA’s policy team and members. 

The Policy Director reports directly to the Executive Director, working closely with the Board of Directors and the entire CALSSA team.

Position Responsibilities

Advocacy & Policy Development

  • Develop policy goals and determine positions

    • Work directly with Executive Director to craft policy goals and long term vision

    • Coordinate with staff and member companies to develop CALSSA positions

  • Support legislative initiatives

    • Research, analyze and track bills

    • Recommend policy details for sponsored legislation

    • Provide policy analysis for legislative staff and at committee hearings

  • Represent CALSSA at state agencies

    • Help track relevant CPUC, CEC and CAISO activity related to distributed solar and energy storage

    • Coordinate with staff and member companies to develop CALSSA positions

    • Compose filings and attend stakeholder meetings

    • Meet with Commissioners and staff

  • Oversee policy staff

    • Together with the executive director, help CALSSA policy staff succeed in their work

    • Meet with staff regularly on problem solving and advocacy strategy

    • Edit filings written by other staff

    • Assist in policy research in response to member inquiries

  • Interact with CALSSA members

    • Facilitate input from members on CALSSA decision making through managing committee meetings and direct communications

    • Explain details of programs and tariffs to member companies in direct communications and by producing webinars and other training events

    • Produce factsheets and website updates

    • Attend regional meetings

Building Public Support

  • Translate and communicate the importance of legislative and regulatory decisions to CALSSA membership, elected officials, media, and the public through press releases, fact sheets, emails, social media posts, and opinion pieces

  • Engage allies and work with coalition partners

  • Speak at conferences and public meetings

Organizational Development

  • Work with membership staff to recruit member companies

  • Help with fundraising efforts to support non-profit association

  • Attend team meetings, board meetings, and strategy development retreats

Experience

A strong candidate will have experience with policy advocacy and familiarity with issues facing customer-sited solar energy and energy storage. They will have excellent communication skills, a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team, and a feel for the regulatory and legislative processes. Specific solar experience is a plus but not a prerequisite.

COMMITMENT & LOCATION

Position is available immediately. A minimum two-year commitment is required. The position is based in the Bay Area or Sacramento, but other locations will be considered.
